“Impossible!” was the response of Jesus’ disciples when He told them to feed the large crowd that had followed them to a remote village. And in truth, what He was asking of them was impossible... in the natural. But when a young boy gave his meager lunch of 5 small barley loaves and 2 small fish, Jesus multiplied his gift to feed 5,000 men along with their women and children.

The operational budget of PICK has never been underwritten. Every event begins with a near zero balance (apart from occasional leftover funds). Pay as you go has been the order of every outreach and program for the last 15 years.

“Impossible!” Many people shake their heads in disbelief when, for example, they hear that three weeks prior to camp we still need $15,000 or that two days before the Christmas program we are still believing for 1,000 more Christmas stockings and 100 more bicycles.
“What a disorganized way to run a ministry!” I often agree with those who feel this way. Those who can afford to minister to the disadvantaged should do it! We simply do not have resources to meet the overwhelming needs of the inner city. Common sense urges us to pack up our few pieces of equipment, shut down our rickety buses, and close our doors.

But the disciples, who also had nothing, were given a mandate. “Feed them” Jesus said. And when the disciples began to distribute what little they had, they found that they had more than enough! We too have been given a mandate. Imagine the hilarity of the disciples when, after everyone had eaten enough, they gathered 12 baskets full of leftovers! I felt that same joy recently when I began to assess what PICK has accomplished in 15 years with volunteer staff, broken buses, and no underwritten financial support. Here are some “guesstimates” of how the Lord has multiplied our efforts:

Fifteen Years of PICK
1,200- 1,500 campers have attended a life changing camp in Colorado
3 0 ,000 - 35,000 Christmas stockings have been given to children
3 5 ,000 - 45,000 people have attended the Annual Christmas Programs
60,000 - 75,000 sack lunches were given away on Saturday mornings
45,000 - 60,000 visits have been made mid-week
75,000 - 100,000 flyers have been distributed
100,000+ attendance for PICK Saturday program

More important than numbers or figures are the lives that have been impacted by PICK and the hope that has been planted in a community that has little reason to hope. Why do we do what we do? It is the love of Christ that constrains us! “Feed them!” He says. And so, with your help, we do. Thank you for partnering with us in this work! The Lord will continue to multiply your gifts to meet every need!

In His love,
